How to Keep New Years Resolutions in July

Most people think they can make a New Years Resolution as the
clock strikes midnight on New Years Eve and their life will
magically change. Feeling intoxicated with the uplifting holiday
spirits, resolutions roll off our tongues.

Yet, if you want to increase your personal power and escape the
ranks of victim-hood through making and keeping New Years
Resolutions, you need more than good intentions.

You need to leave behind forever your woe-is-me history of New
Years Resolutions and begin a new history. One in which you
keep
resolutions in July.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you could accomplish your health New
Years Resolution or your fitness New Years Resolution? Life
would be dramatically different forever.

Disclaimer: Let’s make keeping resolutions in July as fun
and light-hearted as possible. Having escaped mom’s womb with a
crop of grey hair, I know all too well the serious side of life
inside out, and outside in.

In fact, I think it wise to include at least one humorous
New Years Resolution each year. You’re guaranteed a good laugh
and it might change forever your history of New Years
Resolutions.

I’ve discovered that I can still be exceptionally committed to
something while not taking myself too seriously. I encourage you
to consider doing the same.

Making New Years Resolutions is a tad like eating apple
pie, grits, or tacos: each is done quickly, often impulsively,
with expectations of satisfaction.

However, unless the baker bakes soggy, yucky, tasteless apples,
or the cook burns the grits, or prepares tacos with moldy beans,
many more people enjoy the results they get from eating pies,
grits or tacos than making resolutions.

Making resolutions is easy; keeping resolutions six
months later and beyond more difficult and challenging.

It’s been estimated that a mere 20% of us find the strength to
exercise more, eat healthier foods, give up or reduce smoking,
or change other behaviors.

It seems as though our great intentions to keep our top ten New
Years Resolutions fail. Maybe if we only made funny New Years
Resolutions we’d have greater success.

How sad so few of us keep our commitments to ourselves.

How sad so many of us give up and quit, making our commitments
to ourselves meaningless. When this happens over and
over
, we lose face with ourselves.

Our self-esteem plummets, and we have an increasingly more
difficult time believing ourselves. We start believing our only
history of New Years Resolutions will be a painful and
disappointing one.

But there is hope. With some changes in our angles of
vision, we can remedy this. We can change our history of New
Years Resolutions and create a new history.

Remember: our history of New Years Resolutions is just that. A
history. We can always create a new history of New Years
Resolutions, one that brings great joy to our hearts.

How a New Year’s Resolution I Made in 1983 and Have
Kept to This Day Has Slowly, Painfully, Persistently Transformed
Me from the King of Self- Destruction to the Prince of Recovery
and Now The Apprentice of Joy

Flash back to New Years Day, 1983, Phoenix, AZ. Sharing
an apartment with Virginia, a woman who wanted a brother-sister
relationship, while I craved sex.

Hung over, groggy, feeling like shit, I dialed mom, requesting a
loan for a new business. (I’m great at starting them, I suck at
maintaining them).

She agreed with one condition: I needed to promise her
I’d never use drugs again.

Stunned, surprised, uncertain what to do, I remembered I had
recently driven her to the San Francisco Airport, smoking a
joint and extolling dope’s virtues: marijuana, mescaline, acid,
hashish, and amphetamines were close cousins (in fact, much
closer than my blood relations).

Daily I’d roll out of bed and before my feet hit the floor, I’d
be inhaling a joint. Could I possibly ever live without
drugs?

I told mom I’d get back to her with my decision.

On that New Years day so long ago, I began looking at my life,
how I was living, the results I was getting, and how much love
surrounded me.

It was a pretty bleak picture when I faced it honestly, looked
at it squarely, and didn’t run away from those truths and the
reality of my life.

I dialed her number, hands trembling slightly.

“Mom, I promise never to use marijuana or any other drugs
the rest of my life.”

That promise was the beginning of transforming my history of New
Years Resolutions. I now have a much brighter picture than I did
in 1983.

Flash Forward. As of November 2005, I’ve been drug-free
these twenty-two years. I also stopped consuming alcohol in
November 1983, as well as giving up gambling and seven years
later, bulimia.

I had a strong commitment, i.e., the promise to my mom. Could it
be that people who quit their resolutions don’t really have as
strong a commitment as is needed to succeed?

Or could it be that it takes more than a strong commitment
if
emotional wounds from the past haven’t been healed?

Years Resolutions and Keeping Them In July

A Single Word

There’s no denying it; words are powerful. I’m talking
P O W E R F U L! A single word can change your entire perception
of a situation. A single word can completely change the
effectiveness of a marketing or sales message to your market. A
single word can have an effect on your entire business. Let me
explain what I mean.

About 20 years ago I developed a software product for large
mainframe computers. Remember that there were no PC’s in those
days; mainframes were the biggest computers normally used by
businesses and those that had them typically had their own staff
of programmers. My software was a tool designed specifically for
those programmers and helped them with testing and debugging.
Naturally, I had to clearly convey the functionality of my
product to my market (corporate programming groups), but it was
complicated to describe. “…a tool that allows your programmers
to manipulate data files and make quick changes and fixes for
testing, debugging, and troubleshooting…” What was that again?

Then one day, like a bolt of lightening, it hit me. My product
is an editor. Period. An “editor”. What a concept! Why didn’t
I think of that before? An editor. Now it is crystal clear.
Programmers know what an “editor” is. My software allows them to
“edit” their data. Bingo! A single word changed my entire
perception of my own product, and enabled me to clearly describe
to my market exactly what it does. It also allowed me to list it
in directories and catalogs where the listings would be most
effective.

Many years ago, the makers of Sweet ‘n Low were in a quandary.
How do they increase their sales when their product is everywhere
already? Being in the sweetener business, they tried to think of
creative ways of selling more Sweet ‘n Low. Then they realized
that they were not in the “sweetener” business after all; they
were in the “packaging” business. Instead of selling more Sweet
‘n Low, why don’t they package other condiments? Catsup,
mayonnaise, relish, mustard, etc. could all be sold to their
existing customer base. A single word changed the direction of
their entire organization.

At one time the train industry was trying to figure out how to
attract more passengers. Then they realized that they were in
the “transportation” business, not the “passenger” business.
Suddenly they had an entirely new market, and began transporting
freight, oil, coal, vehicles, etc. A single word is all it took
to change history.

What is it that you do? Instead, maybe I should ask, “What is it
that you THINK you do?” Ponder that for a moment. Here’s an
exercise: define what you do and write it down in twenty-five
words or less. Be very careful, concise, and clear in your
description. Expand your thinking for a moment: are there any
other words that could be used to describe what you do? One of
those new words just might give you a surprising insight into
what you COULD be doing.

No Child Left Behind; Give it a boost with E-Gov Live

If no child is to be left behind and we are serious about education then perhaps we need to pay attention to what we teach, teach the truth and have that closest representation of relative truth easily available for all. How can this be done to insure the closest possible relative truth is allowed to flow to increase thought and increase thinking without brain washing or simple memorization? We can put the information in archived bite size lessons on the Internet. Here are the reasons for my theory of Internet archived knowledge, we can use Virtual Reality and visuals such as those often seen on the Discovery Channel. Online learning goes well with the theories and reasoning behind the “No Child Left Behind” Act. Bite size information studies of all areas of human knowledge mean a child at home sick can be learning online. A far removed rural student can make up work when weather is bad and the buses are not running. A student expelled from school for behavioral reasons will not lose out because they went through a new learning phase of their human development. Many colleges and telecommuter students are already doing this for instance; this is already being done at the University of Phoenix.

The University of Phoenix has also put their Gen-Ed classes online, which teaches graduating seniors who will be attending classes there to rethink how they learn? Interesting that they need to re-teach young adults how to learn in order to teach them; this means that something has gone terribly wrong with the system. If this is the case shouldn’t the grade, middle and High Schools be catching onto this too? And after such classes and online content, we must realize that which is memorized needs to be memorized correctly and take into account the way the brain learns?

One way to get the proper information into the schools of this present period so that no child is left behind may be to put the content on the DVDs, integrate it into the TV set and backed up on the Internet at E-Gov, but of course it is not the only way or be all, end all. With this done and with every individual and school allowed to access it, you will have increased the flow of thought and until now we could not do this because of the digital divide, well that wall was torn down, it no longer exists. Creating a seamless information flow for education while still keeping the schooling local, thus without disrupting the system. Think about it.
