Restoring Your Balance with Mushrooms

Mushrooms are valuable health food - low in calories, high in vegetable proteins, chitin, iron, zinc, fiber, essential amino acids, vitamins & minerals. Mushrooms also have a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Their legendary effects on promoting good health and vitality and increasing your body’s adaptive abilities have been supported by recent studies. These studies suggest that Mushrooms are probiotic - they help our body strengthen itself and fight off illness by maintaining physiological homeostasis - restoring our bodies balance and natural resistance to disease.

Agaricus Mushroom

Agaricus is the most widely consumed mushroom in many countries, where it is regarded as a health food, due to its medicinal properties. Agaricus is traditionally known as “God’s Mushroom” because of its near miraculous curative benefits to a wide range of disorders. People have used it to overcome numerous diseases and disorders relating to the immune system, cardiovascular system, digestion, and for weight management, diabetes, chronic and acute allergies, cataracts, hearing difficulties, stress syndrome, chronic fatigue, diarrhea, constipation, and disorders of the liver.

Cordyceps Mushroom

Cordyceps can be a powerful stimulant for macrophage activity, strengthening your immune system’s ability to fight against bacterial and viral infection. Human clinical studies indicate that Cordyceps can be effective for treatment of high cholesterol, poor libido/impotence, arrhythmia, lung cancer, and chronic kidney failure. It is also reported that Cordyceps causes smooth muscle relaxation. This can make it especially helpful for treating chronic coughs, asthma, and other bronchial conditions.

Maitake Mushroom

Maitake is also known by the name Dancing Mushroom, famous for its taste and health benefits. In Japan, Maitake Mushroom is called “King of Mushroom”. The fruiting body and the mycelium of Maitake are used medicinally. In China and Japan, Maitake Mushrooms have been consumed for 3000 years. Years ago in Japan, the Maitake had monetary value and was worth its weight in silver. Historically, Maitake has been used as a tonic and adaptogen. It was used as a food to help promote wellness and vitality. Traditionally, consumption of the mushroom was thought to prevent high blood pressure and cancer - two applications that have been the focal point of modern research. Clinical research with Maitake Mushroom has increased dramatically in the past several years. Laboratory studies have shown that Maitake Mushroom extract can inhibit the growth of tumors and stimulate the immune system of cancerous mice.

Reishi Mushroom

Reishi has been called an “immune potentiator.” Recent studies have indicated that Reishi can have a number of other effects: Analgesic, Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, Antiviral through inducing interferon production, Lowers blood pressure, Cardiotonic action through lowering serum cholesterol, Expectorant & Antitussive, Liver (Hepatitis)-protecting and detoxifying, protection against ionizing radiation, Antibacterial, and Anti-HIV activity. Reishi contains calcium, iron and phosphorus as well as vitamins C, D, and B - including pantothenic acid, which is essential to nerve function and the adrenal glands.

Shiitake Mushroom

Shiitake (for centuries called “Elixir of Life” ) has been licensed as a anti-cancer drug by the Japanese FDA. Lentinan has shown some effect on bowel cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer. Lentinan stimulates the production of T lymphocytes and natural killer cells and can potentiate the effect of AZT in the anti-viral treatment of A.I.D.S. Shiitake is rich in several anti-oxidants (Selenium, Uric acid & Vitamin A, E, & C) as well as Vitamin D. Shiitake mushrooms may also lower blood pressure in those with hypertension, lower serum cholesterol levels, increase libido, stimulate the production of Interferon which has anti-viral effects, and has proven effective against Hepatitis in some cases.

Online Auto Insurance - Getting it Cheap has Never Been So Easy

That’s a phrase that will get any car owner’s attention. Whether you are the sole driver on your insurance plan, have recently added a new teenage driver, have had multiple vehicle accidents or none at all, finding cheap car insurance is a goal for all drivers. Driver’s want the best insurance coverage at the lowest cost possible, whether they meet their insurance agent in person or use online car insurance. So how can they achieve that goal?

Well, a raw search for cheap car insurance is one way to start.

However, there are two markets to consider when searching for cheap car insurancethe hard market, or the “seller’s market,” and the soft market, or the “buyer’s market.” During a hard market, rates climb and insurance is harder to find than during a soft market, when more insurance agencies are competing for business and rates drop. When looking for cheap car insurance, obviously you’ll want to do so during a soft market. Agencies will be lowering rates in order to compete with each other; thus, you’ll find the best coverage for you at the lowest available price.

In order to determine whether or not a hard or soft market is in progress, simply pay attention to what’s going on with insurance companies. Are rates becoming more affordable? Are they offering coverage on a much wider array of individuals/property/etc., even things for which you haven’t normally seen coverage available? And is the competition among insurance companies obvious, i.e., companies are offering to match prices, or even go lower, than other companies? If so, you are probably in the midst of a soft market and a good time to find cheap car insurance.

After all, they don’t refer to the soft market as the “buyer’s market” for nothing!

Change Workouts, Reap Benefits

Through routine exercise, your body gradually builds strength and endurance. However, if you keep your workouts TOO routine, those benefits begin to stagnate. Therefore, it is essential to periodically change your workouts so that your body will continue to reap the most benefits from your efforts.

Why is change crucial?

If you follow the same exact exercise routine day in and day out, your body becomes accustomed to this routine. As the body adjusts to the same workout everyday, it is normal for the body to adapt on a cardiovascular, respiratory, and cellular level. Over a period of time, following this same old routine causes the rest of the body to adapt, as well. As a result, any further physical improvements become limited, and your training becomes boring.

But, wait! There’s still hope! By incorporating even slight changes into your exercise regimen, you are able to kick-start the body once again to move towards those gains you’ve been striving for!

What kind of changes should you make?

Even the smallest change in your routine can make a difference. Below are a few suggestions:

  • Change the time of day at which you exercise.
  • If you prefer one type of exercise, such as running, change the exercise, itself, in some way. For instance, increase the intensity level or the length of the workout.
  • Try a new type of exercise. Introducing a new exercise into your training will ultimately work the body in a new way. Different muscle groups may be called upon to perform, thus, challenging your body to some degree.
  • Alternate among a variety of exercise routines. You may mix up your routine each day, or you may alternate between one routine one day and another routine the next day. This keeps your body on its toes, so to speak…and, it helps prevent exercise boredom.
  • Periodically change the location of your workouts. Even a simple change of scenery can keep exercise more exciting. Such a change also has the potential to boost your energy level and improve your training.
  • Life can be tedious. We often find ourselves in a rut, doing the same things day after day after day. For a more exciting life and better fitness, change your workout routines from time-to-time. Your body and mind will thank you!

    Shooting Cowboys

Photographers love a challenge and there’s nothing more exciting than trying to capture motion on film. In this arena, there’s hardly a venue more exhilarating and powerful than cowboys running horses through the Western wilderness. In Colorado, there are two kinds of “Cowboy Action Shooting.” The first involves guns; the second is a kinder, gentler form of shooting that simply places the photographer in front of the rustling cowboys.

Taking action photos of America’s frontier is the newest rage in photography. It’s as if we want to remember our roots, the great bold Western terrain and the men that run on and tame it. A working horse or cattle ranch offers a wealth of material for the artistic eye…everything from still life photos in a dark barn to the full moon setting over the Rockies. When cowboys work, they move, and all hell might bust loose as a herd of 50 horses comes pounding through the pasture on round up. The color, light, movement, and excitement provided by ranch photography is unparalleled. It is uniquely American and provides something we appear to be craving: remembrance of strength, embodied in the cowboy spirit.

Whether amateur or professional, working cowboy ranch photography offers the kind of challenge that will light your fire. You’ll bring home with you a product that will make you proud: real life scenes of the Old West, where folks today remain true to the spirit that built this country.

Cowboy workshops offer unique challenges. Weather is always a factor, and participants have to be in reasonably good shape to climb up hills, ridges, etc. Moving fifty to sixty horses is never easy and placing your tripod in the path of a thundering herd is, well, adrenaline-producing.

Beriberi: Finding the Cause and Cure

From 1600 to 1920, one of the most common causes of death in North America was beriberi. Most people don’t even know what it is because it is extremely rare today, but the detective work to find the cause and cure spanned many centuries and countries.

Beriberi is a disease in which people first lose feeling in their fingers and feet followed by progressive weakness, heart failure and death. The people in Sri Lanka (then Ceylon) called it beri, the Singhalese word for weakness and it later became known in European circles as beriberi, which means weakness-weakness. In 1850, doctors in England reported that beriberi was extremely common in rich Asians and very rare in Asians who were very poor, but it wasn’t until forty years later that the first reports came out asking if beriberi could be caused by a nutritional deficiency that occurred in the rich and not in the poor. The only nutrient that poor Asians got that the rich didn’t get was in rice husks. The rich ate vast amounts of soft tasty white rice, while the poor couldn’t afford the refined rice so they had to eat the disgusting brown rice.

In the early 1800s, Japanese doctors noted that almost all their sailors came down with beriberi. In 1887, a Japanese doctor named Takaki reported that he cured beriberi by serving the sailors powdered milk and meat. The major breakthrough came when the Dutch physician, Eijkman, reported that he cured beriberi by feeding people rice husks that are thrown away be the very rich who were the only ones who could afford to throw away food. In 1912 Casimir Funk, a Polish biochemist, prepared crude extracts of rice husks that cured beriberi. All these clues and it still took hundreds of years for doctors to find the cause and cure for a very common disease. In 1934 Robert Williams of the University of Texas prepared thiamine (vitamin B1) powder in large quantities. Nobody in North American hears of beriberi any more, because all refined flours now have thiamine added back after it is removed in the milling process.

Water: The Most Profound & Underrated Nutrient

Why do most Supermodels walk around with a bottle of water? Do they know something that we don’t? Is that how they stay so thin? Are they doing it to be chic or do they really believe in the value of drinking it? I don’t know about all that, but I do know this: there is not one single nutrient more important than water.

You can operate without your protein powder. You may find enough energy to get through your next workout without a sports drink. You can even sustain heavy workouts for days and days without eating properly. But you can’t stay alive without water.

If there is one mistake that many, many beginning bodybuilders make it would be their lack of proper water intake. It’s only waterright? Wrong! In fact, I’d be willing to bet that most active fitness enthusiasts are walking around right now dehydrated to some degree. The reason for that is that most have a lack of respect for the importance of water and a lack of understanding as to how much it can truly affect your body’s ability to build muscle and burn fat.

You have probably already heard that an estimated 60-75% of total body weight is water. But did you know the following: water helps to maintain body temperature. Water allows for over 50% of all chemical reactions that take place in the body. It is also responsible for the movement of nutrients, digestion, absorption processes, circulation, and the excretion of wastes. Water plays a part in the transmission of light and sound in the eyes and ears. Water will also help to curb your appetite. If you’re a bodybuilder then you should know that muscle is made up of approximately 70% water.

Consider this: At 2% dehydration, the body’s work capacity decreases by 12 to 15%. Also, body temperature and heart rate increase during periods of dehydration. Dehydration can compromise muscle contractions, decrease strength levels, cause joint pain and much more. Dehydration will definitively stunt your body’s ability to build muscle. Water is truly the most important nutrient on earth!

Did you also know that recent studies have shown that drinking cold water can actually increase metabolism? The science isn’t completely as extensive as I would like, but it seems that cold water enters the small intestines at a faster rate which may affect digestion and so, hence, metabolism as well.

The next question is how much? The body’s average daily loss of fluids through excretion, respiration, chemical reactions, and perspiration varies from about 1 to 3 quarts. A high protein intake calls for an even greater amount of fluids.

I would start my recommendations at a minimum of at least 8-8oz. glasses a day. In my opinion that would be inadequate for the fitness enthusiast and especially the active bodybuilder. Keep in mind we must also consider someone’s metabolic rate as it relates to water loss. In other words, some of us sweat a lot more than others.

Someone very active and building muscle or seeking to lose weight, should consume a gallon of water a day. It sounds like a lot, but the benefits far outweigh the trips to the bathroom. Remember, however, that is an entire day. Drinking too much water all at once can be dangerousespecially during exercise. Be careful not to drink too much in one sitting.

However, water should be your preferred choice of beverage during workouts. Sports drinks contain simple sugar which slows the absorption rate of desperately needed fluids and should not be used until after exercise. Also, one should never take in sodium during exercise. The temporary hypertonic concentration of sodium in the blood will lead to an osmotic shift of fluids out of the working muscles. This causes severe cramping and increased susceptibility to heat injuries such as heat stroke, and heat exhaustion.

A good way to keep your water levels balanced is to weigh in prior to and after your workout, then ingest 16 ozs. of water per pound of weight lost, at the above prescribed rate (8 to 10 ounces every 20 minutes).

Water is life and nothing is more important if your goal is to remain healthy and strong. So, drink up!

Digital Portrait Photography: Shoot The Person, Not The Picture!

Digital portrait photography will produce superb results if you are able to see the person you are photographing, as one of your favorite people at that moment.

Digital portrait photography is for you if you care about people, are interested in what drives them, and how they came to be where they are. Good portrait photographers seem to get the best out of their subjects by being fundamentally interested in them, and being able to connect with them, even if it is just for the duration of the shooting session.

With digital portrait photography nothing has changed about the nature of this interaction! However, you will discover a number of creative - and financial! - advantages.

Whether your aim is professional digital portrait photography, or practicing it as a hobby, one of the best ways to go about it is to heed the written advice of experienced professional portrait photographers. Various aspects of this field have been covered in a number of informative books on the subject.

In ‘A Comprehensive Guide to Digital Portrait Photography’, Duncan Evans covers the different types of digital cameras available, including compact, single-lens reflex (SLR), and specialized models.

He also shows how to create a home studio, and explains the basics of portrait composition, texture, and mood. He includes topics such as color, computer manipulation, using duotones, tritones and sepia tones, and manipulating light and shadow.

A photographer who has published more than one book on digital portrait photography, is Jeff Smith. His books include ‘Professional Digital Portrait Photography’, where he walks you through the steep learning curve for digital portrait photographers. He shows you how to avoid commonly experienced problems, and he provides various techniques for shooting and editing.

Another of Jeff’s books is ‘Learn How To Make All Of Your Clients Look Their Very Best!’, where he gets very practical about photographing real people, and not just models.

He discusses how to be tactful with people about those aspects of their appearance that they don’t want to be highlighted in the portrait image.

His approach is to combine careful lighting, posing, and retouching to correct those flaws. The end-product is a portrait the client will love.

Is you main interest outdoor digital portrait photography? Jeff has also published ‘Outdoor and Location Portrait Photography’, in which he explains how to understand and control natural light, and how to select the best scene. He also includes tips for posing, selecting clothing, as well as marketing your portraits.

If you are keen to set up a digital studio, don’t miss ‘Master The Skills You Need To Build A Digital Portrait Photography Business’, by Lou Jacobs Jr. This book deals with topics such as the following: how to select your equipment; locating and outfitting a digital portrait photography studio; designing an efficient workflow; and presenting and marketing your work.

Know you camera, be interested in the people you deal with, and you will soon be a master of digital portrait photography.

Announcing the Best Guarantee in a Long Term Care Policy

Are you 60 to 70 years old? If not you, maybe a family member? Then you’re about to discover something that could help prevent the total devastation of your personal estate.

Truth is, it’s likely the most important asset you could ever own. Here’s why.

For over 24 years, I have helped hundreds of individuals understand and implement money saving ideas. From birth to death I’ve witnessed families in every financial situation.

As my clients age (and me, too), I can tell you without hesitation the biggest fear of growing old is losing your ability to remain independent.

We might be living longer, this doesn’t mean we’re living any better.

Chronic disease is rampant… and it strikes with a vengeance when you least expect it.

How many people who have experienced a stroke knew it was going to happen to them?

How many anticipated that particular moment when they began to forget things?

The facts speak for themselves. Literally millions of Americans require long term care… either in nursing homes, day care centers, assisted living facilities or in their own homes.

And the cost of providing long term care is rising with no end in sight.

Think it won’t happen to you? Well, I’m sorry. Because this article doesn’t try to convince anyone about the likelihood of their needing care before they die.

It’s intended for those who understand and appreciate the importance of arming themselves with protection against the horrific expense of long term care.

In fact, this article is ideal for those who have already looked at traditional types of long term care policies and are trying to determine which type is best for them.

One of the biggest objections to buying a long term care policy is that if the benefit is never needed the premiums paid for the policy will be wasted.

This is somewhat like buying automobile insurance. You have to pay the premium in order to get your car repaired. But what if you never have an accident. Is that considered losing your premium?

Funny isn’t it? People hardly question paying for car insurance, but they frequently resist doing so for a long term care policy.

So… what if you could always get your premium back - guaranteed - if you never require any long term care?

And, what if you die before receiving long term care? Wouldn’t it be great if your loved ones could recover 100% of your premium expense?

How about this? You actually use up all of your long term care benefit. And then you die. What if your family could still get back 10 percent of your premium.

Now if you know anything about long term care policies you’re probably wondering why you haven’t heard of this type before.

One reason is because it is non-traditional and not included in the mainstream marketing of long term care policies.

Another is because it takes a large sum of money to buy the policy. $50,000 is typical and it’s a one-time single premium, which means you will never get stuck with a premium increase.

It is not uncommon for people between 60 and 70 to have large sums of money stashed away in bank CDs earning low interest. Kind of an emergency fund.

Transferring a portion of this fund into the policy makes sense because the money continues to earn interest. Besides, it usually pays more than the bank… plus, the policy interest is tax deferred.

It’s also common for people this age to have old life insurance policies with significant cash value.

Many times it’s possible to transfer the cash into the long term care policy and still retain a meaningful death benefit.

And the future long term care benefit could easily be worth over one million dollars.

This policy has a 90 day waiting period before benefits are paid. The length of the benefit can be as short as 4 years or as long as your lifetime. You can also get a 5% compound interest inflation protection rider to help keep up with the rising cost of care.

The name of this policy is MoneyGuard. It is a universal life insurance policy with a long term care rider. The issuing life insurance company is Lincoln Life, a subsidiary of Lincoln Financial Group.

By the way, this policy was initially developed by First Penn-Pacific Life many years ago. They have years of experience and an excellent reputation. Lincoln recently bought First Penn-Pacific.

Ask your life insurance agent to get you more information about this single premium policy. For the right situation it is absolutely the best guarantee in a long term care policy.

Easy to Use Tips to Save Money On Your Homeowners Insurance

The price you pay for your homeowners insurance can vary by hundreds of dollars, depending on the size of your house and the insurance company you buy your policy from. Here are some ways to save money.

    Shop around.

Prices vary from company to company, so it pays to shop around. Get at least three price quotes. You can call companies directly or access information on the Internet. Your state insurance department may also provide comparisons of prices charged by major insurers.

Get quotes from different types of insurance companies. Some sell through their own agents. These agencies have the same name as the insurance company. Some sell through independent agents who offer policies from several insurance companies. Others do not use agents. They sell directly to consumers over the phone or via the Internet.

But don’t shop price alone. You want a company that answers your questions and handles claims fairly and efficiently. Ask friends and relatives for their recommendations. Contact your state insurance department to find out whether they make available consumer complaint ratios by company. You can also check out www.badfaithinsurance.org/indexdetaillist.html

Select an agent or company representative that takes the time to answer your questions.

    • Raise your deductible.

A deductible is the amount of money you have to pay toward a loss before your insurance company starts to pay a claim. The higher your deductible, the more money you save on your premium. Consider a deductible of at least $500. If you can afford to raise it to $1,000, you may save as much as 25%. If you live in a disaster-prone area, your insurance policy may have a separate deductible for damage from major disasters. If you live near the coast in the East, you may have a separate windstorm deductible, if you live in a state vulnerable to hail storms, you may have a separate deductible for hail, and if you live in an earthquake-prone area, your earthquake policy has a deductible.

    • Buy your home and auto policies from the same insurer.

Most companies that sell homeowners’ insurance also sell auto and umbrella liability insurance. (An umbrella liability policy will give you extra liability coverage.) Some insurance companies will reduce your premium by 5% to 15% if you buy two or more insurance policies from them. But make certain this combined price is lower than buying policies from different companies.

    • Don’t confuse what you paid for your house with rebuilding costs.
The land under your house isn’t at risk from theft, windstorm, fire and the other perils covered in your homeowners policy. So don’t include its value in deciding how much homeowners insurance to buy. If you do, you’ll pay a higher premium than you should.

    • Ask about discounts for home security devices.

You can usually get discounts of at least 5% for a smoke detector, burglar alarm or dead-bolt locks. Some companies may cut your premiums by as much as 15% or 20% if you install a sophisticated sprinkler system and a fire and burglar alarm that rings at the police, fire or other monitoring stations. These systems aren’t cheap and not every system qualifies for a discount. Before you buy one, find out what kind your insurer recommends, how much the device would cost and how much you’d save on premiums.

    • Seek out other discounts.

Many companies offer discounts, but they don’t all offer the same discount or the same amount of discount in all states. Ask your agent or company representative about discounts available to you. If you’ve completely modernized your plumbing or electrical system recently, some companies may also provide a price break.

    • Stay with the same insurer.

If you’ve been insured with the same company for several years, you may receive a discount for being a long-term policyholder. Some insurers will reduce premiums by 5% if you stay with them for three-to-five years, and by 10% if you’re a policyholder for six years or more. To ensure you’re getting a good deal, periodically compare this price with the prices of policies from other insurers.
