Three Kinds Of Baby Clothes

When buying baby clothes parents are suddenly inundated with multiple choices that can become quite confusing. How many cute and adorable outfits does little Bill or Hillary need? How many “Onesie” body suits are enough? For little people that grow so quickly there are certainly a wide variety of clothing options, how does a new parent know what to get?

To help settle the dilemma and answer these questions, parents need to keep in mind a simple “rule of three.” Babies need three kinds of clothes. Clothes are needed for daytime wear, for going out, and for sleeping. The baby sleepwear will likely outnumber the other varieties since sleeping is what babies spend most of their time doing, but the numbers of each outfit will vary in direct relation to the number of times the parents are willing to do laundry.

Baby Daywear

The clothes you have for your baby to “hang around” in should be comfortable, easy to access for diaper changes, and simple. These are the articles that your baby will spend most of her time in and they’re bound to get dirty. When the baby spits up, spews strained beets all over the place, crawls around on the floor, or does any of the other relatively messy and somewhat disgusting things that babies do, these clothes are going to bear the brunt of the abuse. As such, you probably don’t want these things to happen while baby is wearing the beautiful Baby Dior outfit that Aunt Edna gave as a shower gift. The best clothes for these day to day needs are simple body suits with snaps at the crotch. Onesies are a brand name of these items, but the term has pretty much entered the language to mean any such article designed this way. You’ll probably want anywhere between five and ten of these on hand.

Baby Sleepwear

Clothing for sleeping should meet some of the same specifications as the baby daywear in terms of comfort and accessibility. Obviously if you live in a colder region or it is the middle of December you’ll want heavier articles than if you live in Phoenix and its July. Babies can still be messy when they sleep, but are usually nowhere near as messy as when they’re up and around. In warm enough climates the same style of Onesies that are used for baby’s daytime activities can double as sleepwear, but if the temperature is cooler you’ll want heavier knit PJs or similar sleepwear.

Dressing up Baby

The outdoor baby wear is where the parents really get to shine. Here is where you can utilize the cute and adorable stuff that was given as shower gifts or that you just couldn’t resist picking up during a routine trip to Wal-Mart. These items should still be examined for practicality, making sure that straps, snaps, bows and such do not interfere with diaper changing or cause discomfort to the infant, but you’re a little freer to show off. After all, everyone wants to coo over an adorable baby. When the adorable baby is adorably dressed, the cooing is that much sweeter.

The Armchair Cynics - Anything But Cynical

Recently, a group of talented musicians did the impossible and breathed new life into this aficionado’s decrepit anthology of old favourites. The name of this soulful bunch is the Armchair Cynics and their gift is arena-filling sound, evocative song writing and an edgy yet captivating presentation.

Not only is their music spellbinding when heard over the airwaves but heard live it is awesome and I’m not the only one who shares this sentiment. Included in the Armchair Cynic’s list of fans is Nickelback frontman, Chad Kroeger. Kroeger and business partner Jonathin Simkin have signed the Cynics to a record deal with their label, 604 Records. This union gave rise to their sold-out EP titled “Killing the Romance”.

Simkin told me that neither him nor Kroeger could overlook the Cynic’s ability to write first-rate songs that are not only melodic but also richly layered. That wasn’t their only alluring quality.

“Initially we signed the band to a demo deal to make sure that everyone felt good about working together. The first recordings turned out so well that we decided to go ahead with a record deal. The band has a lot of qualities. Great songs. Great show. Good looking. The whole package was great.”

Lead singer Kenn Coutu is a huge vocal talent with a commanding stage presence and characteristic frontman confidence. Recently he took some time out of his busy schedule to share his thoughts about their music and what they have in store for fans on their upcoming album.

JC: Tell me about the different personalities that make up the Armchair Cynics?

KC: When the Armchair Cynics first started out it was myself, Aaron the bassist and two other guys. I did most of the writing. Then Adam, our lead guitarist, came along. In the beginning he would always say, “Hey I write music too.” But I was so cocky and thought, “I don’t need your help!” Luckily when I heard some of his stuff I realized, “Wow, this guy is really good.”

JC: So you’re all from Vancouver Island?

KC: Yeah, actually it’s kind of funny because Ryan the drummer and I are both originally from Langford so we have a really good comradery. Aaron is from Brentwood Bay and Adam is from Oak Bay, so there is a good-natured rivalry between us (laughter). The more intense personality is myself. Adam is an amazing talented guy. He can play drums, guitar, keyboards. There is so much stuff he can do. He’s really good with computers and graphic arts.

JC: I heard he did the cover for ‘Killing the Romance’?

KC: He facilitated it. He took everyone’s ideas and put it all together. Then there’s Ryan and he’s just a really hard working, really nice guy. It makes us laugh when we talk about how nice he is but he’s talented and he hits the drums really hard. Aaron is a great guy. He’s like the fatherly figure. He’s so diplomatic about everything. If it comes down to personality, it works out perfect for a band.

JC: So as a band, what are your strengths?

KC: We focus on what is really important to us, which are the songs. A lot of bands write really catchy music and their songs are fun and cool but people often wonder what they are trying to say. What are they saying? Nothing. We just try to write really good songs. The down side to that is it takes a little longer. We don’t pound them out just for the sake of getting them done.

JC: What was it like working with Kroeger and Simkin?

KC: One thing about the Chad and Jon team is that they were really good at teaching us. It’s kind of hard to explain but they would tell us that they really wanted to see us get excited about a particular part of a song. They didn’t say, “Do this.” But it was more like, “Show me how many different shades of excitement you have.” Eventually we would find the one that works. Sometimes I’d sit there and try a whole bunch of things off the top of my head and act like a dork and make stuff up. Then Chad would tell me, “Kenn, don’t ever do that again.”(laughter)

JC: How much time did you spend in the studio?

KC: Recording was a long process. It took months and months of going back and forth to Vancouver and trying to work with Chad’s and the other producer’s schedules. We recorded at Mushroom studios, Warehouse studios, Greenhouse studios. We recorded at something like five different studios.

JC: So which do you prefer, touring or writing?

KC: I love to write. Touring is like commercials and because you play it over and over again you get really good at it. Don’t get me wrong. I love to play.

JC: Now you have a huge fan base and one that is growing exponentially.

KC: We really wanted to get engrained in Victoria and it worked out really well for us because we have a great bond. Radio has been working well. It’s amazing what radio does. I can go out and play ‘Bang’ over and over but once people finally here it on the radio that’s when you really see them clapping. It’s amazing. We use MySpace a lot. Whenever we were going to a new town we would just email everyone and tell them we were coming.

JC: Without using labels, how would you describe your sound?

KC: It’s really hard. We go from a little bit ‘dancey’ to mellow to hard and aggressive. I really enjoy bands that are classic, nothing too offensive or too general. Look at the Foo Fighters. They are a classic example. Look at ‘Learning to Fly’. How pop was that? So different compared to their first album. You get a lot of producers who’ll say ‘you’ve got to find your sound’ and it’s like, can we get over that already? It’s kind of a dinosaur approach because if you look at anyone’s CD collection you couldn’t say it has a sound. So it’s in the rock genre but it can go either way.

JC: Was “Bang” the obvious choice for a single?

KC: Yeah. It was up. It was rock. It got your attention. It was one of the last songs to be added to the CD but with that said “Coalmine” was one of our other pics.

JC: Are the songs personal?

KC: Completely.

JC: They sound personal.

KC: Yeah, which sometimes I feel really weird about, but I’ve gone into writing fictional songs with stories that I find intriguing. I’ll take real life and mix it with an interesting story. I’m evolving that way. That way they aren’t all so personal. After a while the guys make a big joke out of it and call it, “Things That Happened in Kenn’s Life Vol 2″ (laughter). I mean come on, how many break ups can a guy have (laughter)?

JC: Has it been hard trying to make it big in Canada?

KC: I don’t know, is it? I hope we find out. I think because of the type of music we play, we’ve been lumped in with Nickelback and Theory of a Dead Man and so we have had some backlash.

JC: What are the band’s short-term goals?

KC: The short-term goal is to do in Vancouver, what we’ve done here. Maybe that’s small thinking on my part but we want to slowly build our way east. The east has a really different music scene. And the States! We’ve got a lot of fans in Washington and out that way.

JC: Long-term goals?

KC: The Long-term goal is to make this a career that lasts longer than five years. The music industry is really fickle. But the music industry needs you. They need musicians to fill those spots. Who is the next, Our Lady Peace? Who is the next, Matt Good Band? So musicians are in demand as much as they think they are not.

JC: If there were one thing that you would want everyone to know about the Armchair Cynics, what would it be?

KC: It’s all about the songs. We just try to touch people. That’s all I want to do. You know? Just make that good moment in a song. Just to make people stop in their car when you’re driving down the road and scream, “Yeah!”

JC: So that’s all I’ve got. Thank you.

KC: Thank you, very much.

Anti-Spammers Need To Develop Better Manners

I sent my e-zine out last week and I received a copy of it back. It had been forwarded to me by a subscriber. In the subject line was a two word sentence; since most publications and websites frown upon vulgarity, obscenity, and profanity, I have spared you the exact wording. Be assured, however, that Miss Manners would definitely not approve.

It is understandable the frustration that people feel when they are inundated with unsolicited commercial e-mail. I myself get more than my fair share.

Despite my Internet Service Provider (ISP) enabling a spam filter and in spite of configuring my own e-mail program filters, I still get spam.

However, the situation with my subscriber is different. He opted in and confirmed his subscription. I use an outside service to handle my mailing lists, in part, to protect myself from false spam complaints.

There are a number of possibilities here. Perhaps my dear subscriber forgot that he subscribed and honestly believed that he received spam.

Another possibility is that he didn’t enjoy the content. The correct response when someone offers you something you don’t want is “No, thank you” not “Expletive deleted”.

If you are offered dessert after dinner by your host and you don’t want any, simply say “No, thanks.” If you accept one piece of pie and then you’re offered another, you may either accept or decline.

My subscriber could simply have unsubscribed. Instead, he retaliated (either because he believes I’m spamming him or he doesn’t like the newsletter).

He said “yes” when he subscribed; he can always say “no” by unsubscribing. Again, “No, thank you” not “Expletive deleted”.

Related to this rudeness is the ignorance some America Online, Inc. (AOL) subscribers show. By ignorance, I mean that they may not even realize they are doing anything wrong when they report e-mail they don’t like as spam.

AOL makes it very easy for their subscribers to report spam. I would say they make it too easy.

Just click the button “Report Spam”. Unfortunately, there is no notation near that button that says “If you subscribed, just unsubscribe.” No, simply “Report Spam.”

And they do. Rather than unsubscribe, some AOL subscribers will report your e-zine as spam. They opted in and subscribed. They confirmed their subscription by e-mail. Their name, e-mail address, IP address, and date and time of subscribing have all been recorded. But, they are reporting you as a spammer.

This, to me, goes beyond rude, as it could affect the reputation and livelihood of the one being reported.

I wish I could say that receiving obscenities or threats by e-mail is rare. Sadly, this is not the first time for me.

Among the many messages I receive are some that say that the e-mail I tried to send (from some strange or nonsensical name at my domain) was undeliverable or blocked and is being returned to me. Of course, I never sent that e-mail in the first place.

Occasionally, I receive rude (sometimes threatening) e-mails from people who thought I sent them some of these spoofed e-mails. This is the equivalent of swearing at and threatening someone who you believe allowed his dog to defecate on your lawn. The only problem is that the man doesn’t have a dog.

Again, I sympathize with those who are irritated by spam. I just wish they would direct their indignation at the spammers instead of me. In fact, Miss Manners would have reminded us all that there is never any excuse for rudeness.

Show Me the Money: an MRO Inventory Analysis

You don’t have to be a genius to recognize that a lot of money is tied up in MRO inventory ….especially if your business requires the use of capital-intensive equipment. Literally millions of dollars are tied up in spare parts for day-to-day Maintenance, Repair and Operations (MRO).

Historically, no one ever really ‘owned’ inventory, so stocking another item “just in case” had very few, if any repercussions. Inventory was often seen as a necessary evil of doing business. The term Inventory Management was almost an oxymoron. There were few procedures for setting up an item, no standard structure or format. Item information was written in the manner of each individual….first onto cards, which were later transcribed into a computer system. More often than not, there were no stock review processes. The only ‘management’ of inventory came with its annual physical count undertaken for financial reporting purposes.

Typically over time, Stores inventory grew… and grew… and grew… to the point where the numbers were just too big to ignore. That’s when inventory gets the attention of management: when the numbers are just too large to ignore any longer. After all, that’s real money tied up in parts. Good money… paid out to suppliers… for maintenance workers’ peace of mind.

The ironic thing is that maintenance workers do not often have much confidence in Stores inventory. They do not trust that parts are really there in the quantities stated, or that they are still usable. They might even keep a private cache of parts hidden somewhere for their own use. Or they might by-pass Stores altogether and just order the part directly from the supplier. These scenarios are real and they add further to costs.

When a formal inventory review is undertaken, we often find that unfortunately, many item descriptions are inadequate, with spelling errors or missing manufacturer names and/or part numbers. Often the part descriptions are unrecognizable by a tradesperson.

Before any inventory analysis can take place, inventory item description data must first be cleansed. Any sort of benchmarking activity requires that you know your starting point (i.e. what you currently have on hand). Once data has been cleansed, we typically find duplicate items ranging from 5% to 15% within a given site. The percentage of commonality of items across multi-site companies can range as high as 25%.

Inventory can then be sorted into typical commodity groups: Bearings, Industrial Supplies, Electrical, Instrumentation, Fluid Power, and Pipes, Valves & Fittings. Commodity groups can then br segmented into categories: required active, excess active, and inactive. Required Active inventory includes commonly used parts that must be stocked. Excess Active inventory is the overstock of Required Active items (i.e too much of a good thing).

Inactive items can be further segmented into critical spares, slow-moving, and obsolete materials. Critical spares are items essential for the business to run…stocking out would significantly impact production quality, safety, or costs. Slow-moving inventory includes parts with long lead times, parts which might affect plant efficiency, “recommended spare parts” for a piece of equipment or “emotional” inventory (i.e. parts that are kept to satisfy risk aversion).

Optimization or rationalization of each inventory category is serious business and can return serious dollars.

Typically we find that Required Active inventory ranges from 25%-30%. Excess Active inventory ranges from 10%-20% and Inactive inventory ranges from 50%-60% of inventory… of which Critical spares represent 15%-20% of inventory, Slow-moving inventory represent 20%-25% and Obsolete items represent 15% of inventory.

The opportunity for savings predominantly comes through the elimination of duplicate items and the rationalization of Excess Active and Slow-moving inventory. These items can be used down through attrition, sold back to the Supplier for credit, or sold to a third part for cash. Obsolete items may also offer some opportunity for generating cash.

Let’s look at a case study example to illustrate typical findings when an MRO inventory analysis is performed. A multi-site manufacturer with eleven locations decided to undertake a pilot inventory analysis project at their four Wisconsin sites only. If the project created enough value, then it would be extended across the entire organization.

MRO data was cleansed consecutively for all four sites. Item descriptions were standardized into a noun/modifier format, using industry nomenclature. A Corporate Catalog was created consolidating all items from the four sites.

Site by site, the cleansed data was first sorted for duplicate identification, then it was segmented by commodity group into categories and analysed by usage and supplier.
The results were impressive enough to attract the remaining sites:
duplicate items represented approximately 9% of inventory. Item bins were consolidated. It was determined that the overstock would be used down through attrition;
about 20% of inventory items were found to be at excess stocking levels (Excess-Active). They were returned to the Supplier for credit, yielding cash savings of $1.1 million;

obsolete materials were identified and disposed of, generating $100,000 in cash;
a long-term plan was designed to address Slow-Moving inventory items to determine the value/life of the part and its appropriate stocking level;
and at the same time, the company decided to share highly valued spares within the regional area, further reducing stocking levels at all four locations.

With a return of more than $1.2 million, the pilot project was deemed a success and plans are currently underway to implement MRO inventory analyses at each of the remaining sites.

MRO inventory ties up a lot of money for capital-intensive, multi-site manufacturers. It takes a proper inventory analysis project to reveal the opportunities for transforming some of that inventory into cash. With a little effort, you too can turn your necessary evil into a corporate good.

Stop Snoring by Losing Weight

Ask anyone who has lived with a partner or family member who is a consistent snorer and they will tell you that a night of unbroken sleep facilitated by the absence of constant snoring is a priceless prize. The majority of people, however, seem resigned to the idea that snoring is part of their fate. They view being stuck with a snoring partner as ‘bad luck’, something that they have to put up with as best they can. Despite this attitude, snoring can build resentment in the unfortunate spouse or partner, placing a strain on the relationship. This is in addition to the lack of sleep and associated irritabilities that heavy snoring can cause. There are, however, several potential solutions to the snoring problem that can be explored by snorers and their long-suffering partners. In this article we will look at one particular line of thought for tackling the affliction of snoring, which might also provide additional health related benefits.

The idea that we will be discussing is that of losing excess weight and adopting a more active lifestyle. It has long been thought that being overweight and leading a sedentary lifestyle can contribute significantly to a snoring problem. Therefore losing weight may well reduce or even completely stop the heavy snoring, which can cause so much anguish. The theory is that excess weight around the neck and chest areas creates added pressure on the muscles required for normal breathing while asleep. This in turn can lead to snoring. It is by no means the only cause of snoring, but it is one for which there is a considerable body of evidence. So for many overweight people, slimming down can provide much needed relief from snoring. We have already touched on the benefits that preventing snoring can provide to relationships, but of course losing weight will also provide other health advantages.

It may be that the individual will not have to lose a large amount of weight to see an improvement in the snoring condition. A few lost pounds may be all it takes to reduce the snoring and provide a markedly more restful sleep for all concerned. Therefore, an overweight snorer should not view this as an unattainable goal. Indeed, the peace provided by lack or reduction of snoring should serve as motivation to continue along the path of a healthier lifestyle.

A fantastic way to induce weight loss and therefore improve the snoring condition is to incorporate exercise into one’s daily schedule. This has a double benefit, as being active is also thought to have a beneficial effect on snoring, possibly due to exercise making muscles and the breathing/respiration process more efficient. Exercise does not necessarily mean sweating it out at the gym three or four times a week. It can be as simple as walking more frequently, climbing the stairs instead of taking the lift at work, and so on. You should start slowly and gradually build to a more active lifestyle. Remember, it is always a good idea to consult your doctor before embarking upon an exercise routine. Gradually work more activity into your life and your partner should notice an improvement in your snoring.

It is also important to eat a healthy diet. This will have many benefits including your twin goals of weight reduction and to stop snoring. It is not easy to break bad habits, but remember that snoring not only affects the snorer, but also the partner and in turn their relationship. Visualising how pleased your partner will be with your efforts to provide them with the benefits of refreshing sleep induced by no snoring can be another tool to keep you motivated.

In conclusion, we have explored how losing weight, developing healthier eating habits and adopting a more active daily routine can help you to tackle the problem of snoring. Not only that, but it will help to generate a healthier you in general. If you suffer from snoring and are overweight or lead an inactive lifestyle, this approach is well worth considering in addition to any other remedy you may consider. Stop snoring, develop a healthier you!

Golf Ball Comparison - How To Select The Right Golf Ball

It is said that the golf ball itself is the most technologically advanced piece of equipment in the game today; the only way to find what will work for you is to do a golf ball comparison. With new and dynamic materials being used, for core structure, the compression rates, and outer skin materials the golf ball is actually a well-machined tool.

There are many different balls available for many different types of golfer, low compression balls are generally suited for novice golfers, and while high compression balls offer the best results for the tour pros. This is not to say that someone who is new to the game, cannot take a high compression ball out for a test drive it just means that the results cannot be accurately read by you.

When it comes to compression, this is basically what type of core reaction you will get when striking the ball. The lower the compression the less explosive the reaction, the higher the compression the more the ball will ignite off the tee. What is known as a soft ball or low compression somewhere in the range of between 70 and 80 compression does not have the distance that a high compression like 100 would give you. These low compression balls are actually great for control, and play well come short game shots like wedges and high irons. This is to keep the ball from coming in hot and rocketing off the green on approach.

Medium compression balls in the 90-compression range carry more distance than their 70-80 compression counterparts, yet still have somewhat of a soft feel on contact and are still relatively easy to control. These balls are great if you know how to shape your shot, and will find their mark more times than not.

And finally we get to the high compression such as the 100; this ball is for maximum velocity and distance. This ball is not easily manageable by the average golfer, as it has explosive tendencies. This ball will give you the distance to carry the fairway on a long par 4 or relatively short par 5, yet will be more temperamental when it comes to keeping it in play. Make sure you do your homework prior to settling on one particular ball this is the best measure in determining the right ball for you.
