A profitable business bottom line depends on effective teaming as much today as it ever did; yet, “effective teaming” may be destined to be no more than another irrelevant buzz phrase, because by and large teams are still dysfunctional and broken.
If you’ve ever worked in a team - and I’ve yet to meet someone who hasn’t - I know you have at least one horror story to tell about a team that crashed and burned. Isn’t it ironic that with all that’s been written about the negative impact dysfunctional teams can have on business and with all the training available to help correct the problem, success is still elusive.
It’s easy to ignore the damage that dysfunctional teams can do to a business, but the financial impact can be huge. Consider the wasted time in meetings debating the same issues again and again, as well as the constant squabbles and in-fighting over priorities that lead to inaction or worse, bad decisions that result in good money being thrown down the drain.
A recent Microsoft study found that U.S. workers spent an average of 5.6 hours per week sitting in meetings and 69 percent reported that they were not productive. Business is about increasing revenue and profits, so the financial implications to the organization are significant. A $100,000 worker will cost their employer roughly $13,000 to sit through meetings that waste time and do nothing to further the organization’s business goals. Ask yourself if you can afford the $130,000 price tag for having a 10 person team waste hours week after week.
Though some are jaded at the prospect that teams can work together successfully, I believe they can. Developing the cohesiveness that ensures success, though, requires that the root causes of team dysfunction are identified and cured. However, overcoming the issues that lead to dysfunction in the first place is a daunting task requiring openness, disciple and the courage to see it through. The reality is that many teams can’t or won’t summon the strength to tackle the challenge, but those willing to take it on will surely reap the rewards.
There are scores of reasons why teams don’t work. Common ones touted are a lack of clarity about team member roles, a lack of focus on doing the right things at the right time in the teaming process, a lack of appreciation for the unique strengths of every team member, and a failure to reward and recognize the contributions made by each person. Mix in conflicting professional agendas, increasing diversity, lack of trust, a global business world where people are teamed together “virtually”, as well as a resistance to clarifying goals and roles up front, and it’s no wonder teams are stuck.
For teams to perform at their peak, it all begins with trust, unfortunately a rare commodity these days. Trust is the first and most critical component of building a strong team. However, trust cannot be forged when team members put their personal agenda first, refuse to ask for help, when they are unwilling to admit mistakes and blame others, or they summarily dismiss the opinions and ideas of other team members. If team members don’t feel they can trust each other, effective teaming is impossible.
One way to begin building trust is to recognize that people behave differently; they exhibit different behavioral styles and they have different motivations. While you cannot motivate another person, all people are motivated. The mistaken assumption often made is that all team members are motivated by the same things and nothing could be further from the truth. For example, in a situation where a team is working together to achieve a sales goal, it might be easy to assume that everyone is motivated to hit the sales target. But are they really? What happens when not everyone on the team stands to earn compensation for hitting the goal? Sure, the sales person cares, but does the support staff have the same motivation if they don’t share in the commission? Doubtful.
Taking the time to develop a greater understanding of individual behavioral styles and motivations will foster a trusting environment, improve communications and builds a foundation for effective interactions with other people. And before you start griping about not having enough time, remember that it costs your company in more ways than one if you don’t make the time. Doing the upfront work positions teams for innovative performance.
Cohesive, high performing teams give an organization a powerful competitive edge. Great teams don’t waste precious time focused on the wrong issues, nor do they constantly revisit the same topics over and over again, in meeting after meeting, because team members didn’t buy-in to the goals from the beginning. High performing teams make high quality decisions; they get more done in less time without the normal personal hassles and frustrations. Finally, when it comes to keeping great talent in the organization, which is itself a significant competitive advantage, remember great people don’t walk away from teams that get it right!

It’s easy to be put off by the idea of online banking. Worries over whether it’s really secure or not, remembering all those complicated passwords, and wondering how to manage a complicated interface are all concerns that people have; people who haven’t taken the plunge that is.
Oddly, for an Internet professional I was in this camp myself until recently when I remembered that I hadn’t paid a bill late at night and couldn’t get to the bank in time to pay it before incurring any charges.
I hate paying for things I don’t have to so that simple act of forgetfulness made me start looking a bit more seriously about whether or not online banking was actually going to work for me.
So I went over to the online banking section of my banks web site and took a look. Filling in the application form was relatively straight forward and only asked me for the kind of information you can get without having to rummage around through boxes of old paperwork, which was a pleasant surprise.
A couple of days later a letter arrived telling me I had to activate the account and enter a special code to get things going (I’d already saved another special number from the application stage). Back to the computer then to activate the account.
After a couple of minutes following the instructions I’m suddenly plunged headlong into the world of online banking. I can see my statement whenever I like, I can pay bills night or day and just generally manage my account when I want to, not just when the bank’s open.
This is an exciting new world and I’m loathe to log out for fear that I’ll never be able to get back in again, but eventually I do and get on with the busy of earning money rather than just watching where it’s all going.
The next evening I decide to give it another go and am surprised by how simple it is to get back in (having memorised a couple of important passwords of course), and I can see that the bills I paid last night are all cleared and on my statement.
Now of course I’m a convert and regularly turn up at my bank in my slippers at 11pm to be greeted with a warm welcome and a range of online services that I wouldn’t have dreamed possible before I’d actually tried it.
And the best thing of course, no more interest charges when I’m a little more forgetful with bills than I really should be. So, if you’re still worried about whether online banking is worth the hassle, you should give it a try. It’s not nearly as complicated as you think it’s going to be and it’s far easier than trudging down the high street with a load of bills!

There are several things that are important about procurement that you should consider. In a business standpoint, timing is virtually essential. If you are like many business owners, the best time is the time when prices will be low enough to handle. This can be quite difficult to call and even more so, it will be difficult to manage. But, when procurement is used effectively, your business truly can reach new heights. What should you consider in procurement?
• You will want to consider the timing. If you take delivery of the product now, will you have to pay additional inventory costs? If you wait another week, will it be less likely to cost as much? This would be quite vital information in a large organization that is using procurement for large quantities of items.
• What about the cost? One of the most difficult things to call is pricing. Will it be lower today than it was yesterday? Or, will prices begin to rise soon? Knowing when to make your move is quite critical.
• Also, you’ll want to consider the procurement as in how much risk you are taking on. Companies that can not afford risk in finances shouldn’t look towards large, risking procurement options. Instead, a safer option is necessary. But, the opposite can be true as well.
• The bottom line in the procurement process is making decisions. In order for you to be effective at purchasing at the lowest prices at the right time, you need to be able to make a decision. Oftentimes people miss their chance because of the what ifs. In business, a what if will cost you big time.
Taking the time to analyze the procurement in order to determine whether or not it is a good move is up to you. You can find reasons to wait, of course, but if you are to get anywhere with the procurement, a decision to grab it and go with it has to be made as well.

Are you one of those people who heads out to your local ski area until the rocks are beginning to show through the slush? You just can’t get enough powder and skiing during those few months in the winter. You are in luck. The National Geographic Adventure magazine of December 2005/January 2006 gives those die hard skiers some ski area options for year round slopes. If you have the money and the time, you can hop from ski area to area and visit a few different continents to get your snow fix. If you don’t have a lot of money, you can pick a ski area that will take the sting off of the summer drought of skiing.
From December to February, head to the Italian Alps and Sestriere, Italy where the prices are very reasonable and the skiing is great. You may recognize this as one of the spots where events were held for the 2006 Olympics in Torino. This ski area has six resorts that are all connected with around 250 miles of trails.
Once March to May hits, many of the ski area spots in the Northern Hemisphere are beginning to close. The Heavenly Mountain Ski Resort is a smaller, less crowded area than its bigger and busier neighbors to either side: Kirkwood and Squaw Valley. The slopes are very steep and challenging and you will find the slush bowl in May a fun way to spend the day watching people.
Over the summer months, when the snow is long gone in your favorite ski area, you can head up to Canada or down to Chile and find skiing happiness. The Blackstone, British Columbia area boasts the Whistler ski area, which is one of the most famous in the world. Not only will skiers find great powder, and miles and miles of trails, snowboarders, bikers and bungee jumpers can find something to appeal to them here as well.
In Portillo, Chile, you will find a rustic ski town without a lot of the perks of some of the fancier ski resort towns. But if you want skiing bliss at its best and simplest this may just be what you are looking for. They do have one 7,000 foot run and miles of other trails.
Finally, back in the U.S. for the first skiing of the new season, you can head to Wolf Creek Colorado. They have the highest annual snowfall in Colorado and 500 acres of trails and 6 lifts.
So, take a trip (or a few) and feed your need to ski year round.

Danny Jacobs wanted to give his wife a present for their tenth
anniversary that she would remember forever. He thought about
jewelry or maybe a weekend at the spa, but those gifts seemed
too generic. He then decided to give her a gift that represented
something they both loved more than anything else - pictures of
their children. “She gave me the world when she brought our

There are a lot of things in life you can be cheap with, but
photography of your kids is not one of them. It seems that every
retail store has a photo studio, and then there are mall photo
stores too, both promising to capture your family’s history for
cheap. The truth is that they do an okay job for the price, but
do the low paid and overworked employees of these retail stores
really have the talent and desire to capture the spirit of your
family? The answer is probably no. When selecting
a child photographer you have to be selective, and you
should never go cheap. These are the memories of your children
that you are capturing, and that can’t be left to just
anyone.
There are as many types of child photographers as there are
children. That is why you should carefully select a child
photographer that is a good fit for both you and your
children. One of the first things to ensure is that the
photographer is good with children. This seems obvious, but
sometimes parents forget that everyone doesn’t have the same
high regard for kids as they do. The next thing to look for is a
photographer that knows how to capture the child and not the
background. The sets can be an important part of the photo, but
they shouldn’t distract from the child. The most important thing
when selecting a child portrait photographer is to look at some
of their other work. If they have done a good job with other
kids then you can be sure they will probably do fine with
yours.
When getting pictures of your kids you have a several options.
For many years child photos were taken in studios. Almost all of
us have pictures from our childhood that include us sitting in
front of a setting sun or behind a fence. These photos were fine
then, but with the level of talent that is available now boring
studio shots are a thing of the past. If you do get studio shots
choose a solid background like white or black. If you have the
choice get a family photographer that can come into your home or
meet you in a natural setting like a local park. It has been
found that people are more comfortable in their homes and
outside and the pictures turn out much better.
There are some things in life that are free like the love of
your children, and there are some things in life that are just
as good at any price. There are, however, some things that a
parent should never go cheap on, and one of those things is in
the preservation of moments. Life is ephemeral and we can never
go back and do things again. All we can do is capture the
moments that are important to us, and one way to do this is with
a professional child photographer.
